Dismantling a backlit panel
February 2025
We are at junction 39 ‘Eynatten’ on the E40 motorway between Liège and the German border. There is a programme to dismantle illuminated signage, which is systematically replaced by conventional vertical reflective panels.

The ageing traffic lights were replaced in December 2024-January 2025. This photo shows the new equipment in front of the old, which was dated: probably 1979, with further work carried out around 1981 and 1991. We also know that Socal-Light and Solupla manufactured the illuminated signs.
It was the Service Public de Wallonie (SPW) who informed the MuSé of the planned modernisation of this junction 39. By mutual agreement, it was decided to organise the rescue of one of the illuminated signs at this junction between the RN68 and the E40 motorway.
Through this initiative, the MuSé plans to save just one illuminated sign: that of Eupen...

The aim of acquiring this sign is to have a light signal for each of the country's national and regional capitals: Brussels, Brussels, Namur and Eupen.
The dismantling operation took place on Thursday 13 February 2025.

First of all, we had to carry out a site survey. After inspecting every place on the site where the dismantled panels were stored, we found the one that interested MuSé: Eupen!
First operation: carefully detach a box from all the illuminated panels. They were all connected together using 17 mm nuts and bolts. Once detached, the light box was loaded into the car, along with the front and rear faces of the sign.

Once back in Trooz, this exceptional piece of equipment was carefully cleaned, both inside and out.

Finally, after a cursory examination of the electrical installation in the casing, the fluorescent tubes were returned to the panel and... they lit up again. Mission accomplished!

Thank you to the Walloon Public Service.
